Pre-order template
Our themes come with a built-in pre-order template that can be assigned to products. Before using it, it is essential to understand the limitations of this template:
- Shopify does not have a native pre-order feature. Consequently, the only thing the theme does is change the wording from Add to Cart to Pre-order on product pages. The whole purchasing flow remains unchanged (for instance, the checkout and email notifications will remain the same as for a traditional order).
- For this template to work, you must ensure the product can be purchased (it must not be sold out).
- The template is assigned at the product level, so you cannot show the pre-order button for some specific variants.
Therefore, the built-in pre-order feature in the theme is only suited for simple use cases. If you have more requirements regarding the pre-order feature, you will need to use an app (we recommend you reach Shopify support for some app recommendations).
Assigning the pre-order templates
To assign a template, navigate to a resource in the Shopify admin (such as a product, page, or collection). On the bottom right, locate the "Online store" card, and click "Default product" to display this resource's existing templates. Finally, select the template of your choice, and save:
If you do not see the template you have created, this might be because the theme is not published. Alternate templates are contextual to the published theme only, so you won't be able to assign a template until the theme is published.
If you customize a draft theme, the template won't appear in the Shopify admin. This is a Shopify platform limitation.
