How to create unique product/collection templates

IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE: creating new templates requires you to use an Online Store 2.0 compatible theme. For now, only our themes Warehouse (from version 2), Prestige (from version 5), Focal (from version 8) and Impact (from version 1) are supporting this. By default, whenever you add a section to a product or collection page or change a setting, every product, and every collection will be affected the same way. Sometimes, it is desirable instead to have a setting or a section that applies only to one (or a group) of products or collections.

To do that, you need to create custom templates. Please select below if you wish to create a template for a product, or a collection, to see the relevant instructions.

I want to create a unique product template

First of all, open the theme editor and, in the page selector at the top, select "Products":

Then scroll until the end and click on "Create template":

Enter a name for your custom product, and for the "based on", select "Default":

You will be redirected to the custom product template itself. You can then configure it to your needs (for instance, you can add new sections, or you can change some settings that you want to be different just for this template).

Once you are satisfied with your custom template, you will need to assign it to an actual product to make it accessible to your customers. To do that, open the Shopify admin and select "Products":

Select the product and, in the "Theme templates" on the bottom right, select your newly created template:

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: product templates are contextual to the active theme. This means that if the theme on which you have created the template is not your active theme, you won't see it in the list. You will therefore need to wait until you publish the theme before being able to assign your template to a product.
